Patwari is the village account or the administrative officer in a village who is responsible for maintaining land records of the village. India’s approximately 70% population still lives in rural areas and around 43% of India’s workforce is employed in agriculture. Therefore, the job of a Patwari in India is crucial.
The word Patwari corresponds to a person in the local authority who maintains ownership records for a given area and collects land taxes. A phrase often used in North and Central India. Patwari’s primary job is to measure the land and maintain land records.
Measuring land and keeping land records is the main work of the Patwari. The Patwari is known by different names in different states – in some villages such officers are called Lekhpal, in others Kanungo or Karamchari or Village Officer etc.
The selection as Patwari is done through a particular exam process. The selection is done based on a written exam. The written exam has 5 sections that are, General Knowledge, Quantitative Aptitude, Hindi Language, Village Panchayat System, Computer Aptitude. The exam comprises 100 marks.
